Fighting for Jen, by Cara Carnes

Synopsis: She fights for those who can’t fight back…

Jennifer Davenport vowed to never back down from a fight. Raised in a violent home, she’d survived her share of nightmares and monsters lurking in the shadows. She’s made it her life mission to help all of Counterstrike’s clients start a new life. Her former Delta force brothers get them out, and she paves the way to a better future. Easy, right?

Yeah, no. She’s used to threats, but when they turn deadly, she finds herself turning to mysterious, sexy leader of the local MC. The Scythe MC’s President is everything she shouldn’t want yet can’t resist.

Banner “Razor” Nilon left military service wrongly branded as “dishonorably discharged.” Rather than walk away, he chose to fight within the shadows. The Scythe MC was formed for one purpose: redemption. The goal was simple: operate off the radar and prove he and his club brothers were all innocent.

But the club hit Counterstrike’s radar in a big way and the beautiful, brilliant attorney has shaken his entire world up. Walking away when she’s in trouble isn’t possible, especially when the little spitfire defends his club. Yeah, taking on her war to find whoever wants to kill her might not be the smartest plan, but he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe—even if it means playing nicely with her protective, billionaire do-gooder big brothers and all their former military operatives. They may not always play by the rules, but Razor’s never met a rule he wouldn’t break.

Review: I stumbled across Cara Carnes' Arsenal series a few years ago, and she immediately became one of my favorite authors. Like the Arsenal series, this Counterstrike series will suck you right in. And once you're in the Counterstrike world (which crosses over with both Cara's Arsenal world and Susan Stoker's book world), you will never want to leave. This is Jen and Razor's story, and holy hell, it was a hot one. Razor is the sexiest hero in the series so far (in my opinion), and the alpha-ness seeping from him was tangible. I kept picturing Sebastian Stan with his long hair in the Avenger movies. If you haven't read this series yet, start at the beginning. The books are available on Kindle Unlimited (lucky us!), and once you see how great they are, you'll be adding them to your library as well. For me, each book in this series has been better than the last, though I haven't been disappointed in a single one. If you like military romance, romantic suspense, Susan Stoker's books, or just a darn good read, you need to check out this author.

Webster's defines resting book face as follows: (a) the look a person gets when someone interrupts them while they're reading a really good book; and (b) the vacant stare of a reader who is mentally lost in their book world when reading isn't possible. Okay, fine. It's not in Webster's. But it should be.

The Body in the Backyard, by Lucy Score

Synopsis: Her self-absorbed news anchor ex-husband careening back into her life was not on this amateur psychic detective’s bingo card. Not only does Griffin Gentry show up unexpectedly at Riley Thorn’s door—the real shock is that he’s begging her for help. Riley’s hot private investigator boyfriend Nick Santiago refusing to take the job is…well, less of a surprise. Too bad for Nick that his octogenarian business partner overrules him and takes the lead on Griffin’s case.
